Film Classics Start New Season
The 2011/2012 season began with a concert of film classics played to a packed audience at the Church on the Heath, Elvetham Heath on 29 October.  The concert included a wide variety of themes, selections and suites taking listeners on a grand tour around the globe from films such as
Out of Africa, Lawrence of Arabia and Kismet.  Film music legends such as John Barry and John Williams featured with music from Zulu and Indiana Jones.  The programme included some more unusual items which showcased our soloists such as the emotional Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra by Nigel Hess from Ladies in Lavender, performed at the concert by Amanda Lake and the atmospheric Jazz Suite by Shostakovich from Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, which featured our Saxophone section. Programming Committee
A Pelly Orchestra Programming Committee has been formed from members of the Orchestra and chaired by Musical Director, Christopher Braime, to plan the programmes for the coming season.  This is a new venture, an opportunity to discuss themes, new ideas and to tackle the very real challenge of putting together a concert orchestra programme which will please orchestra members and audience alike.  Vist our Concert Diary page to see what has been programmed for the 2011/2012 season.

July 2011

Pelly Double Bill
In a new departure, the orchestra held 2 concerts on the same day at High Cross Church in Camberley on 2 July.  Our Children’s Concert in the afternoon aimed to introduce a younger audience to the delights of live orchestral music in a relaxed atmosphere.  Music included Debussy’s Children’s Corner, Pirates of the Caribbean Suite and Old MacDonald accompanied by a variety of farmyard noises courtesy of our wonderful percussion section.  In the evening we held a chamber concert which showcased the many talented musicians in the orchestra.  Music of a very high standard was played and included an oboe quartet, horn trio, bassoon quartet, string quartet and wind group.

April 2011
Pelly goes Elizabethan!

Our spring concert was a celebration of all things Elizabethan.  Queen Elizabeth I inspired a vast amount of artistic creativity in her lifetime, and the nostalgia of her reign spanned the generations into the 20th century. Our concert took a look at composers who were inspired by her life from Purcell to Benjamin Britten who composed Gloriana for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.  To see the programme, click here.

March 2011
String Quartet Play at Dinner

The orchestra was recently asked to provide a string quartet to play background music at the Odiham Wellington Dinner which took place on 19 March 2011, in aid of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.  A quartet comprising Leon Crampin, Jinny Gribble, Emily Myles and Lynda Trice was dispatched to represent the orchestra and further the aims of its recently acquired charitable status.  A most enjoyable evening was had by all, not least the string quartet who, having played Haydn, Mozart and Borodin quartets for their supper, were made most welcome by the organisers and guests.  It was also an opportunity to publicise the orchestra and hopefully attract a wider audience to our concerts.

February 2011

Charitable Status

We are pleased to announce that the orchestra was offically registered as a charity on 9 February 2011.  Our Charity Commission No. Is 1140319.  We are currently in the process of registering with HMRC to be able to claim Gift Aid.  This means that we will be able to claim tax back on subscriptions paid by most of our members and any donations that we may be given.  As an orchestra we do not own any percussion instruments and we would love to have our own set of timpani.  Any grant or donation towards this cause would therefore be most welcome.

February 2011

Our Third Play Day

A very enjoyable day of challenging orchestral playing took place at Farnborough Hill on 27 February 2011. Members of the orchestra were joined by other local musicians to play through Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, The Pines of Rome by Respighi and La Mer by Debussy.

January 2011

Rhapsody in Blue

The orchestra was thrilled to perform to a packed audience at our concert on 29 January.  This was the Christmas concert which had to be rescheduled to late January due to the snow in mid-December.  The programme was adjusted - Christmas music was replaced with exciting and varied pieces such as Copland’s Hoe-Down from Rodeo and Shostakovich’s brilliantly orchestrated Tahiti Trot.  Mike Thomson played piano solo in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and performed with style and skill and the orchestra (complete with support from a row of extra saxophones) rose to the challenge of this jazzy and spectacular piece.  In the  second half, the ‘Beatlecracker’ Suite (after Lennon & McCartney and Tchaikovsky) was entertaining for both audience and orchestra. To see the programme, click here.

October 2010

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

As part of our October Concert entitled ‘Pelly On Demand’ the Orchestra performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major with our brilliant leader, Amanda Lake, on solo violin.  Amanda enthralled the audience with her virtuoso playing of this difficult concerto and the orchestra supported her sensitively.  The concert was an eclectic mix and included Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Bernstein’s Candide Overture and the Dambusters March by Coates.  To see the full programme, click here.

July 2010

New Pelly Orchestra Chair

We are delighted to announce that, following the Orchestra’s recent AGM, the new chair is Barbara Sykes (flute).  She will be assisted in the role by Karen Carter (bassoon) as Vice-Chair.

Barbara currently teaches flute in the Camberley area, in local schools and privately from home. She also does work for the Flutewise charity, working with young people. Barbara is keen to further her personal flute playing and has recently studied with David Nicholson and Ian Clarke. In addition to the Pelly Orchestra, Barbara also plays with Farnborough Symphony Orchestra and Quintessential Winds, a local wind quintet.

Barbara is passionate about music education and enjoyment both with youngsters (and the not so young) and is looking forward to taking on this instrumental (!) role in continuing to bring live, exciting music to our local audiences.

Christopher Braime (Musical Director) said: "I am really looking forward to working with Barbara. Her expertise in the field of education gives us the insight to develop the work we are doing in the community, and I think that this is a hugely important part of what we do. We also have other very exciting projects planned, and Barbara has the skills to drive these forward and build on the orchestra's achievements."

Fabulous Audience in New Venue Enjoy Pelly Prom

This year’s ‘Last Night of the Pelly Proms’ concert took place on Saturday 17 July in the wonderful surroundings of the Church on the Heath, Elvetham Heath.  A packed and enthusiastic audience enjoyed a varied programme in the first half including a world premiere - Three Dances from Lola Montez by local composer, David Perkins.  This was a spectacular piece - one audience member commented: ‘it was fantastic to hear brand new music for the first time with the composer in the audience; the mesmeric quality of the final dance reminded me of Ravel’s Bolero’.  Other highlights were Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Sullivan’s Yeomen of the Guard Overture. During the second half the mood became more frivolous and audience participation was the order of the day led by our charismatic conductor, Chris Braime (sporting an outrageous union jack tail coat!).  The audience was brilliant - the singing, whistling, clapping and hooting were first class and perfectly timed!  We were delighted to welcome back soprano, Diana Vivian, who brought the house down with Rule Britannia and our trumpet soloists entertained with a high speed rendition of Anderson’s Bugler’s Holiday.

The concert was filmed and recorded - excerpts will be available on this website as soon as they are ready - watch this space!  To see the full programme, please click here. To view photos of  the conductor during the rehearsal on the afternoon of the concert, please click here.

Play Day - Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Pelly Orchestra members and friends enjoyed our second annual ‘Playday’ at Farnham Maltings on Sunday 27 June 2010.  Despite being one of the warmest days of  the year so far, the orchestra remained cool as it mastered the symphony over the course of the day.  Everyone enjoyed the challenge as well as the opportunity to socialise over a picnic or pub lunch. Thanks go particularly to Karen Carter (bassoon) for masterminding the day.

Orchestra receives £1000 grant

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation have awarded the Pelly Concert Orchestra a Grassroots Grant of £1000 to be spent on new music by the end of this year.  Music hire and purchase is a major expense for the Orchestra so this is an exciting opportunity to invest in some wonderful new music for us to play.  Our music librarian, Barbara Sykes, is busy drawing up a shopping list and we hope to start enjoying this new music at the beginning of the next season in September.

Children’s Concert is Huge Success

The Orchestra was thrilled to play to a packed audience of all ages at the Children’s Concert on 27th March.  The challenging programme - all aimed at introducing young people to the joys of live orchestral music - included Peter and the Wolf, and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra - narrated by Olivia Chappell  and the Carnival of the Animals complete with two pianos, played by Linda Tan and Gillian Young. A massive percussion section was kept busy in all the pieces and had lots of fun providing the animal noises in an arrangement of Old MacDonald by Leroy Anderson - accompanied enthusiastically by many of the children in the audience!  Chris Braime, Musical Director, was delighted with the performance and particularly pleased to be playing to young people who will be the musicians and concert audiences of the future.

March 2010

Educational Visits to Schools

A small group of Pelly Orchestra members embarked on a new venture this week - providing educational visits to local schools.  The group had a very friendly and enthusiastic welcome at both schools visited.  The children were treated to an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra through the story and themes from Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, which ties in with the Orchestra’s forthcoming concert on March 27th.  The children were also invited to come to the concert to hear this work (and others) in its entirety and to design and wear a facemask depicting one of Prokofiev’s characters.  A prize will be awarded for the most appropriate mask on the evening of 27th March.

February 2010

Alea Quartet - Concert in Hartley Wintney
Regular audience members at our concerts will know that we are very lucky to have a wonderful orchestra leader in Amanda Lake.  Her solo playing is also sublime and a treat for all those who listen to her.  An extra opportunity to hear her playing is coming up on Friday 23rd April at 7.30pm when she leads the Alea Quartet who will be putting on a concert at St John’s Church, Hartley Wintney. They will be playing a programme of string quartet music with an international theme, including works by Haydn, Dvorak, Mozart and Ravel.  Tickets are available from Moutan Flowers, Auriol Wines (01252 843190) and St John’s Church.

Snow doesn’t stop Orchestra’s Perpetual Motion!

Our New Year Concert - due on 9th January - had to be postponed when most of the country ground to a halt following heavy snowfall the previous week (9 inches in Camberley) and frozen conditions made driving and parking almost impossible.  Undeterred, the orchestra’s committee re-scheduled the performance for Saturday 17th January and a wonderful evening of dance and operatic music with a Viennese flavour together with seasonal poetry readings was enjoyed by both the orchestra members and the audience. Highlights included ‘Plink, Plank, Plunk’ played by the string section entirely pizzicato, the Toy Symphony starring the cello section who played the ‘toys’ and a moving selection from Madame Butterfly.  The programme included several Strauss pieces including Perpetuum Mobile which can be listened to here.

Hallowe’en Treats at Concert

An enthusiastic audience at High Cross Church enjoyed an evening of orchestral treats for the ‘Pelly’ween’ concert on October 31st. Musical Director, Chris Braime, led the orchestra in a challenging programme of music written around the magical, the mystical and the downright terrifying!  The concert began with an atmospheric performance of ‘Mars’ from Holst’s Planets and included other highly topical pieces such as Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns featuring Amanda Lake on violin and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Dukas featuring Paula Burton, Karen Carter and Helen Taylor on bassoons and contra bassoon.  To view the complete programme, click here.

New Venue for Summer Proms Concert

At our concert on 31st October our Chairman, Mike Thomson, was delighted to announce that the Orchestra has secured the Church on the Heath, Fleet,  for its next Summer Proms Concert. This event has been a complete sell-out for the last two years and it was felt that a larger venue was needed for 2010. The Church on the Heath offers more audience space and - crucially for an orchestra - more acoustic space.  It has excellent facilities and there is plenty of free parking in the immediate vicinity.

September 2009

Leader Amanda in prestigious concert

The Orchestra was delighted to learn that our leader, Amanda Lake will be playing in the Purcell Room on 11th October.  She is a member of  the Alea Quartet who have been asked by the Park Lane Group to play Peter Maxwell Davies 10th Quartet.  For more details or to book tickets, click here for the Southbank website.

May 2009

Playday at Farnham Maltings

The Orchestra welcomed local musicians to join them for their first ‘Playday’ at Farnham Maltings on Saturday 31st May.  This was a fabulous opportunity to tackle the challenging and very beautiful Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 in E Minor. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable day, made new friends, and had a lot of fun playing a variety of music under the inspirational baton of Christopher Braime.  To view photos of the day, click here.

A Very Pelly Christmas!

Our Christmas concert on 20th December 2008 was a festive occasion with music to suit all ages.  The highlights included ‘Tubby the Tuba’ (narrator Lesley Nicholls, tuba soloist Daniel Barnes) and The Snowman (narrator Lesley Nicholls, soloist Tabitha Machin).  Also on the programme were a spectacular performance of music from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ by Klaus Badelt, the Suite from ‘The Nutcracker’ by Tchaikovsky, Troika by Prokofiev, ‘Sleigh Ride’ by Leroy Anderson and communal carols.
